Gelcoat oxidation occurs when the outer layer of a boat’s fiberglass becomes dull and faded. Prolonged exposure to UV rays and environmental elements breaks down the surface, leaving behind a white, powdery residue that resembles chalk.

If your boat is showing signs of oxidation, we recommend skipping the standard "Wash & Wax" and opting for a professional gelcoat correction. Gelcoat is porous, and any damage—such as oxidation or marring—can prevent wax from properly bonding to the surface. As a result, the wax wears off quickly, leaving the gelcoat vulnerable to further damage throughout the season. Removing oxidation not only restores your boat’s appearance but also protects the gelcoat from ongoing deterioration.
